Recommendations Executive Summary This report evaluates the assumption that joints which display semirigid behaviour can be modelled as frictionless pinned joints in building design calculations. The idealisation is evaluated by comparing computer simulations incorporating this assumption with experimental test data for the actual structure. The results show that the idealisation is safe and is usually conservative in estimating the structural strength; however these conclusions are limited to cases where the joints display large deformations before rupture of the bolts or welds. Only in few, probably unrealistic cases will this assumption lead to unsafe results which overestimate strength. It is recommended that three conditions are necessary for the safety of semi-rigid joints: joints must show enough ductility, welds must be well designed in order to avoid premature fracture and the design of the joint must be such that the rotation is practically possible.

Bringing an emphasis on technical writing to a freshman course in electrical engineering
We have recently added a strong writing component to one of our freshman courses in electrical engineering. The students prepared two kinds of reports—memoranda and formal engineering project reports. Our instructional objectives were to execute well these two forms: to write with a professional tone, and to make good choices about which technical material to include. To meet these objectives, ...
متن کاملStandardization for natural product synthetic biology.
Standardization is one of the foundational features of modern-day engineering, and the use of standardized parts and processes is a key element that distinguishes bona fide synthetic biology from traditional genetic engineering. Here, we discuss the role of standardization in natural product synthetic biology, focusing on standardization of data on biosynthetic pathways and gene clusters, as we...

This review describes the recent research activities in China in relation to studies on antibiotic biosynthetic pathways and pathway engineering in actinomycetes. 75 references are cited.
متن کاملApplying Cyc: Using the Knowledge-Based Data Monitor to Track Tests and Defects
An application of the Cyc system is described, in which the system contributes to the software engineering effort involved in its own construction. Using its Semantic Knowledge Source Integration (SKSI) facility, Cyc interacts with bug reports tracked using the standard Bugzilla defect management system, performing actions such as post-bug-fix tests, and creating and reopening bugs reports as n...
